Master Suite Addition & Renovation – Washington, DC

Master Suite Addition in DCBetter Homes and Gardens: “A Light-filled Bath. Adding skylights revealed unattractive, thin ceiling trusses. They were boxed and finished to match the cabinets, and now they stand out with a presence. Vertical rows of glass block allow sunlight to enter from an adjacent bedroom. Muted colors were chosen to create a quiet, peaceful atmosphere for bathers.”

When the homeowners first contacted Glickman Design Build, their needs were many. They wanted an updated, spacious, plush master suite that was more in tune with the rest of their home. Cramped closets directly off the bathroom created traffic jams in the morning and the lack of floor space to accommodate oversized furniture in the bedroom meant this master bedroom was no retreat. Adding a fireplace, providing their teenage daughter with more privacy and creating an open feel were key goals of the project.

The homeowners allowed their daughter to move into another unused bedroom, which enabled Glickman to utilize the daughter’s old bedroom to create the new master suite. Glickman added light and interest to the space by exposing and decoratively treating the trusses, as well as installing three skylights. The master bathroom was transformed into a spacious, functional, retreat: a large vanity with two sinks and a make-up area, as well as a separate tub and shower enhanced by a curved, glass block wall. The new closet, which Glickman repositioned in the daughter’s former bedroom, provided ample dressing and closet space. The addition of a fireplace and a full-light door leading to their private deck added the final luxurious touches that made this master bedroom a true master suite.
