Make It Yours – Do You Like What You See?

In 2020 thousands of homeowners in the DMV were forced to take a long, hard look at their home. Not necessarily in dollar value but from the point of view of “livability”. They were asking themselves questions like, are we comfortable? Is there room to grow. Do I want to invest in this particular house? Is the family happy here? Do we like the neighbors, the neighborhood, schools and is it close to the amenities needed for convenient living? When I look out of my window do I like what I see?

The COVID crisis made these questions even more relevant because so many of us began working from home. Our new reality had us living, and working, 24/7 in our homes with the entire family. No escape-except to another part of the house. But what so many homeowners discovered was, there was no other place in the house to go! A sperate home office was desperately needed. A larger kitchen to accommodate the entire family plus those close friends who were “in the bubble” became mandatory. Suddenly senior care facilities were not an option and the need for In-Law Suite additions sky rocked. In other words, customizing the home to the exact specifications needed to meet the new challenges life was presenting became paramount.

Make it Yours.
Over the next several months Glickman|Design Remodel Build will be featuring different projects and stories of how homeowners are choosing to stay in their homes and embarking on remodeling projects that create a home they can truly call their own. We’ll be starting with a massive outdoor deck project designed and built by Russ Glickman at his own home. Then exploring other projects that reflect the trends that are meeting the new demands of the modern homeowner.

The Dream Deck- Part 1
“When you look out of the window, do you like what you see?” That was the question Russ Glickman asked his wife Anne in the summer of 2019. Anne’s answer was a resounding yes and NO. While the incredible Wisteria vines that weaved through their expansive two-story outdoor deck were miraculous, the deck surface, railings, and stairs had significantly deteriorated. “The whole deck had become so dilapidated over the years that there was no other choice but to tear the entire thing down and redesign a new one” said Russ. The plans were drawn in early 2020 and by June of last year, the tear down and rebuild were under way.

We will chronicle the build over the next several months and show how Russ along with his team of designers from Glickman|Design Remodel Build are building this massive outdoor deck. And yes, the Wisteria was saved and will be featured in all of its splendor on this new version of the Glickman family’s deck.
